Jensen Huang Says Society Needs New Social Norms. He Is Right. And the Work Is Harder Than the Phrase.

In an Associated Press interview in Sherman, Texas, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said society needs “new social norms” for the age of AI. He backed targeted regulation, flagged US energy constraints, doubted government ownership of AI companies, and urged people to embrace the technology rather than fear it.

His framing for the shift: cars reshaped cities. Streets had to grow sidewalks and crosswalks. Society adapted its norms to a new reality. AI will require the same.

The analogy is good. And the part he left out is worth naming.

Who Actually Writes the Norms

Cars did not wait for pedestrians to have an opinion. Neither will AI. The new social norms are going to be written in practice: by the companies deploying agents, the platforms setting defaults, the employers redesigning workflows, and the regulators who arrive after the first wave of significant failures. The people who get the most say in what those norms look like are the ones who move first with enough scale to establish the default.

That is the context for Huang’s advocacy. Nvidia’s business runs on accelerating AI adoption. Every quarter of faster deployment is a quarter of stronger GPU demand. His encouragement to embrace rather than fear is both sincere and commercially rational, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, it means the new social norms he is calling for are not a neutral outcome. They will reflect the priorities of the companies doing the building.

This matters for anyone with a stake in how AI lands in their industry. The organizations that wait for the norms to settle before deciding how to engage will find the norms were written without them. The ones that engage now, with policy, with workforce design, with governance frameworks, have actual influence over how the standards develop.

Huang is right that the shift is coming. The car did change the city. The question is whether you are building the sidewalk or getting moved off the street.
