Big Tech Just Committed $500 Million to the Workforce Problem They Helped Create

Former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo is now leading Raise US, a new nonprofit with $1 billion in fundraising ambitions and $500 million already committed. The anchor partners are some of the largest AI companies in the world: the OpenAI Foundation, Anthropic, Amazon, and Microsoft.

The stated mission is to build a national platform advising state governors on workforce preparation for the AI transition. Initial state partnerships are underway in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maryland, and Utah, an intentional split between Republican and Democratic governors.

There are two ways to read this.

The skeptical read: the companies whose AI development is displacing workers are now funding the nonprofit designed to manage the fallout. The scale of the commitment relative to the scale of the displacement is modest. Workforce transition programs historically underperform their ambitions, and naming a former cabinet secretary as the leader does not change the structural difficulty of the problem.

The operational read: this is something real. The decision to work directly with state governments rather than run national programs is a credible strategy choice. States have the workforce development infrastructure, the employer relationships, and the policy levers to move faster than federal programs. That is a concrete tool, not a press release.

For board members and senior executives, the Raise US announcement should prompt a question that goes beyond the company itself: does your organization have a workforce transition strategy, or just a workforce reduction strategy? The two are not the same, and the enterprise buyers of AI systems are increasingly being asked to account for the human side of deployment in procurement conversations, board reporting, and investor diligence.

The AI companies funding Raise US have concluded this is a board-level issue. They are right.
