The Numbers Fortune Published This Week Say Something Leaders Need to Hear

Gallup released data this week that Fortune summarized with precision: Gen Z excitement about AI fell 14 points in a single year. Hopefulness fell 9. Anger rose 9. And the finding that deserves the most attention: daily AI users showed bigger drops in sentiment than people who do not use it at all.

The more they engage, the worse they feel.

That is a verdict. Not on the technology. On the leadership surrounding it.

As a commercial strategy executive who spent a decade selling AI-driven platforms to the CMOs and CDOs whose companies are now quietly freezing junior hiring, I was in those rooms before the contracts were signed. I watched what happened after the implementation teams left.

What I witnessed, over and over, is this: the organizations that struggled were not the ones with inferior models. They were the ones that treated AI adoption as a technical project when it was always a human one. They automated without explaining. They measured speed and cost reduction while quietly bleeding the judgment, creativity, and institutional knowledge that had made them competitive. And then they wondered why their workforce felt unprotected.

Gen Z is not turning its back on AI. It is turning its back on institutions that adopted AI without thinking about people first.

That distinction matters enormously, because it changes the answer.

If the problem were the technology, the solution would be better technology. But if the problem is leadership, the absence of intentional human partnership around AI adoption, then the solution is available right now, in every organization, at every level. It does not require a new model or a new platform. It requires leaders who understand that the most powerful competitive advantage in the Intelligence Age is not algorithmic sophistication. It is human collaboration.

That is the argument at the center of my book, The Intelligence Loop – A New Model for Growth and How We Get Smarter Together, which comes out June 23. Find the book here.

The Gallup numbers are not a Gen Z problem. They are a leadership opportunity. And every organization that recognizes that before its competitors do will have a significant and durable advantage.

The window is open. Not for long.
