The United States of America turns 250 today.
“United States”… hearing those words always reminds me of my middle and high school years studying Civics, United States history, and learning the stories of those who sacrificed so much to make this country still the freest nation on earth.
I’ve spent a career in the technology and data industry, through recessions, acquisitions, turnarounds, and reinventions. I’ve watched technology promise to replace people about five different times now. Mainframes, the internet, mobile, cloud, and now AI.
Every time, the people who won weren’t the ones who got replaced or the ones who resisted. They were the ones who figured out how to work alongside the “new thing” better than anyone else. That idea sits at the center of The Intelligence Loop, the book I wrote this year: the future belongs to the most collaborative humans, not the most automated companies.
But that’s not really what’s on my mind today.
What’s on my mind is a country that lets people take risks, get knocked down, and keep going. No one guarantees us anything here – only the promise that we can pursue our own paths to happiness. That’s always been the deal, and it’s still the best deal in the world.
250 years ago, a small group of visionaries and risk-takers bet everything on an idea most of the world thought was reckless. That idea still works. Still worth defending. Still worth building on.
