AI Cybersecurity Just Crossed a Threshold. Most Boards Are Not Ready.

Something important just shifted in the AI and cybersecurity conversation, and many companies haven’t caught up.

Axios reports that specialized AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic are already accelerating offensive and defensive cyber operations in ways traditional security workflows cannot match. Early testers say these tools can identify, validate, and exploit vulnerabilities dramatically faster than human analysts working manually.

This is not a future risk. It is a 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 one.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐬: AI has moved from productivity tool to machine-speed cyber capability. The skill barrier to execute a sophisticated attack is dropping. Attack timelines are compressing. Legacy security operations centers built around human analyst workflows are not designed for this speed.

The enterprises already behind are the ones treating cybersecurity as an IT issue. It’s now a board-level enterprise risk issue. 𝘍𝘶𝘭𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱.

The immediate winners are the vendors who can operationalize AI defense at the same speed the offense is moving. 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐤𝐞, 𝐏𝐚𝐥𝐨 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐨 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬, 𝐙𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐫, 𝐂𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨. Cloud providers who have integrated security and AI tooling. Governments investing in cyber readiness.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬:

– Enterprises still running understaffed, manual security operations.
– Software vendors with weak patch discipline.
– SMBs that haven’t modernized their detection and response infrastructure.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡: whether labs keep these cyber-capable models tightly gated or widen access, breach disclosures that cite AI-assisted attacks, and CISOs reallocating budgets toward autonomous defense platforms.

The AI conversation at most organizations is still about productivity and workforce transformation. Those are real. But companies that focus only there while ignoring this are making a strategic error.

𝘏𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴 and machines have to work together on both sides of this. That’s the argument in my forthcoming book. It just got more urgent.
