AI Is Everywhere. The Organizations That Know What to Do With It Are Not.

McKinsey’s latest research lands on a conclusion that practitioners have known for a while: the competitive advantage in the AI era will not come from deploying individual AI tools. It will come from redesigning the entire enterprise around them.

They call it the “agentic organization.” The five pillars they identify — business model, operating model, governance, workforce, and technology — are all correct. But the one that matters most, and the one most organizations are handling worst, is workforce.

McKinsey’s framing is precise: employees shift from performing tasks to orchestrating outcomes. Humans move “above the loop,” supervising AI agents rather than completing every step themselves. New roles emerge — people who direct AI agents, people who redesign workflows, people who manage the exceptions AI cannot handle.

That is a significant change. And it is not primarily a technology change. It is a leadership change.

Most organizations are still treating AI adoption as a tooling question — which platforms to buy, which workflows to automate, which headcount to reduce. The organizations that will win are asking the harder question: what kind of humans do we need when the machines handle the routine?

The answer requires judgment, purpose, and the ability to make decisions in conditions of ambiguity. Capabilities that have always been the exclusive domain of people. Capabilities that no AI agent will replace.

The McKinsey research confirms the case at the enterprise level. The conversation we need to be having makes it at the human level. They are the same argument.
